September 13, 1900, Penobscot, Maine, USA - December 8, 1954, Los Angeles, California - American actress.

Her parents are British theater actors.

Gladys hit the stage at an early age and at the age of three she began performing with her parents in a vaudeville called Trinity of Clars. In 1914, she made her Broadway debut in The Engagement, and six years later she made her first film screen appearance in Hot Dollars. Having starred in several silent films in the early 1920s, Gladys suffered severe burns in a fire in 1921, and as the actress needed time to recover, her film career was cut short.

In 1922, she married the failed actor Ben Hervey and divorced him eight years later. In the early 1930s, Gladys returned to acting on Broadway - thanks to the patronage of her second husband, Edward Fowler, with whom she married in 1933 - and in 1934 she returned to the screen. In the same year, she signed a contract with MGM. In 1936, Gladys starred in the drama "Courage - Kerry's Middle Name" and was nominated for an Oscar for her role in this film, which was the greatest achievement of the actress in her entire career.

From the late 1930s to the mid-1940s, the actress had a busy schedule. The most significant of her works were the 1937 drama Madame X, the 1938 historical melodrama Marie Antoinette (the actress played Madame Dubarry, and her partners were Norma Shearer, John Barrymore and Tyrone Power), the 1939 crime drama Raoul Walsh's The Fate of a Soldier in America and the 1941 noir film The Maltese Falcon, in which Gladys starred opposite Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor. By that time, the actress managed to divorce Fowler and acquire a third husband - actor Leonard Penn became him.

Further, the career of the actress, who was already over forty, began to fade. On the screen, she appeared less and less, and more and more often - in secondary roles.
