September 8, 1899 - April 26, 1984 - American Black and White Film Actress.
McAvoy's debut film was the 1917 film Hate. After appearing in over three dozen films, she co-starred in Ben-Hur, directed by Fred Niblo. The film became one of the most spectacular in the silent film era. Nevertheless, May considered her best work with Al Jolson to participate in the first sound film "The Jazz Singer". Although she did not participate in dialogues in this film, her voice was heard in several films, including the second Warner Brothers soundtrack, the horror film The Terror. Her voice didn't sound very good on the recording, so she soon stopped acting. She later returned and played several small roles in films from the 1940s and 1950s. In 1957, she starred in her last film, "Making a Woman" .
In 1984, May McAvoy died of a heart attack. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. For her contributions to cinematography, a star was laid on the Hollywood Walk of Fame near 1731 Vine Street.
