He directed in particular the film Ben-Hur (1925). Was one of 36 founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927, an organization for the improvement and promotion of world cinema, which established the Academy Award in 1929. In 1901 he married Josephine Cohan, the older sister of the famous George M. Cohan, who died in 1916. In a second marriage, in 1918, he married Enid Bennett, an Australian stage actress who became a household name in American silent films. From a marriage that lasted until Niblo's death, three children were born. After spending two decades acting in vaudeville shows across the country and also working as a manager for four Cohans (he married Josephine Cohan, sister of the famous George), Fred Niblo moved on to cinema. In 1916, he appeared as an actor in several Australian films that marked his screen debut. He later worked with Thomas Ince as a producer and director. Many of these films have been starred by his second wife, Australian actress Enid Bennett. From 1918 to 1921, Niblo was contracted to Paramount, which he then left to go to MGM, where he remained from 1923 to 1931. For his contribution to the film industry, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (Hollywood Boulevard, 7014).
