In his youth he was an athlete. He attended Le Moines College, studied business and philosophy, but ultimately decided to pursue a career in theater. He studied at Rutgers University, where he received a master's degree in fine arts and met his wife, actress Eliza Taylor. They have two children. Tim has a brother - Jamie Dickey.
