Ava DuVerney - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Director, Producer, Writer, Actress.

Born August 24, 1972, Long Beach, California, USA - American film director, screenwriter, producer, actress, and publicist.
Despite the fact that Ava received her last name from her biological father, her stepfather raised her with her mother.

Ava graduated from Lakewood High School in 1990 and then attended the University of California Los Angeles, where she became a Chartered in English Literature and African American Studies.

All her summer vacations Ava preferred to spend at the house of her stepfather, who told her a lot about his childhood. It was his stories that later formed the basis for the drama Selma.

Ava found her first job in the field of journalism, but quickly became disillusioned with this activity and switched to PR.

In 1999 she founded The DuVernay Agency; has acted as a marketer in more than a hundred films, while releasing documentaries at the same time.

In 2010, DuVernay released her first feature film, I Will Follow, which earned her critical praise and several awards in the independent film industry. In 2012, she released Halfway to Nowhere, for which she won the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, becoming the first African-American woman to win an award for Best Director in a Motion Picture. In 2013, she directed the short film The Door, presented at the 70th Venice Film Festival, and then Shonda Rhimes invited her to direct one of the episodes of the third season of Scandal. It was the episode "Vermont Is for Lovers, Too".

In 2014, DuVernay released her third full-length feature film, Selma, based on a true story of the 1965 civil rights struggle. DuVernay received Golden Globe and Independent Spirit nominations for Best Director. The film was nominated for an Oscar, but DuVernay was not nominated as a director, which is why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was sharply criticized from both the press and viewers, especially on Twitter.

In 2015, DuVernay announced her next film, which will tell the love story of Hurricane Katrina.
