A native of Naples, De Laurentiis graduated from the Acting Department of the Cinema Experimental Center in Rome. He starred in minor roles and began producing musical melodramas back in fascist Italy. De Laurentiis produced his first film, L'Amore Canta, when he was only 20 years old. He founded the film company "Real Cine", was one of the directors of the studio "Lux film", then together with Carlo Ponti became the founder of a new company with film studios in Rome. After World War II, the producer organized the filming of films for most of the Italian neorealists, including Nights of Cabiria and The Road by Federico Fellini. The wife of the producer was the star of the Italian cinema of the 1950s, Silvana Mangano. In 1956, De Laurentiis created a new film company, De Laurentiis cinematographika, which became one of the largest in Italy. In the 1960s, his activities expanded beyond Italy, he worked with the largest directors of the second half of the 20th century - Luchino Visconti, Ingmar Bergman, Jean-Luc Godard, Sergei Bondarchuk, Eldar Ryazanov, Milos Forman, David Lynch. De Laurentiis managed to become one of the most successful Hollywood producers, on account of which the blockbusters "King Kong", "Conan the Barbarian", "Three Days of the Condor" .
He collaborated twice with David Lynch on Dune (1983) and Blue Velvet (1986). De Laurentiis has directed many of Stephen King's novels (The Dead Zone, 1983) and all of the Hannibal Lecter films (with the exception of The Silence of the Lambs)
The name of De Laurentiis is associated with the discovery of many Hollywood stars - Jane Fonda, Al Pacino, Charles Bronson, Jessica Lange, Arnold Schwarzenegger. And in old age, the producer did not go away from business, remaining one of the most influential figures in world cinema. In 1990, De Laurentiis married again - to the head of his firm's administration, Martha Schumacher. Together with her he was the producer of his best films of recent years "Crash" (1997) and "U-571" (2000) .
On November 11, 2010 he died in Los Angeles at the age of 92
