Born August 23, 1965, Flynn Flon, Manitoba, Canada is an American screenwriter, producer, director and cameraman.

In the early 1970s, Avery's family moved to California, where he attended Mira Costa School. In 1979, Avery started working at Video Out-Takes, one of the first video stores in Southern California, owned by his father's friend Scott Magill. One of Avery's early Super-8mm films won the LAFTA (The Los Angeles Film Teachers Association) prize in 1983.

In 1981, Video Out-Takes co-owner Lance Lawson opened his own Video Archives store. Here Avery met Quentin Tarantino, with whom they became friends. From 1985-1986, Avery attended Menlo College in California, which served as the prototype for Camden College in his film Rules of Sex. In 1985-1986, Avery studied at the Art Center College of Design. In 1987, he traveled to Europe, impressions from which formed the basis of episodes in "Rules of Sex" and "Kill Zoe."

In 1994, Avery and Tarantino received an Oscar for their screenplay for Pulp Fiction.

In 2008, Avery had an accident in which a man died. Avery was sentenced to a year in prison, but was released early after 8 months.
