September 16, 1910 - April 29, 1992 - American actress.
She began her career as a dancer, once performing in the same number with Barbara Stanwick, and in 1929 she made her film debut. Most of all she starred at Universal Studios. where she appeared in hits such as "Front Page" (1931) and "Frankenstein" (1931), where she played the role of Henry Frankenstein's bride. In the same year, the film "Public Enemy" was released, in which May played the role of blonde Kitty, a girlfriend of the character of James Cagney. The film became so successful that it was shown in theaters in Times Square 24 hours a day. She also played the role of Alice in the 1930 film based on the book by Lewis Carroll "Alice in Wonderland" .
Yet perhaps her best-known role was Mayra Deauville in the 1931 drama Waterloo Bridge. Clarke portrayed a young American woman who, due to circumstances, is forced to earn a living by prostitution during the First World War in London.
By the late 1930s, May Clarke's career began to decline. In subsequent years, she began to get fewer and fewer roles, and her last appearance on the big screen in the movie "Watermelon Man" in 1970 was not even noted in the credits.
The actress was married three times and divorced all three times, while she never had children. May Clarke died on April 29, 1992 at the age of 81 from cancer at a film actors' home in Woodland Hills, California.
