For the next few years, she continued to play in the theater, and also toured with her sister Anne with vaudeville throughout the country. In 1918, Roth first appeared on movie screens, performing a cameo role in a silent film. In the late 1920s, having received her education by that time, she signed a contract with Paramount Pictures and in 1929 returned to the cinema. Roth played the bulk of her film roles until the mid-1930s, appearing in the films Love Parade (1929), Army Parade (1930), Thieves and Hunters (1930) and Madame Satan (1930). At the same time, she continued to play on Broadway, where she took part in a number of successful musical productions as an actress and singer. In the late 1930s, Roth went into the shadows, ceasing to play in the theater and act in films. The success of the film re-awakened public interest in Lillian Roth, and in the following years she performed several roles on television, and in 1962 returned to Broadway with the musical "I'll Get You This Wholesale." In the 1970s, Roth reappeared on the big screen, playing small roles in Alice Sweet Alice (1976) and The Promenade (1979) .
The actress was married five times, and all of her marriages ended in divorce. Lillian Roth died of a stroke in 1980 at the age of 69 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Westchester. Her contributions to the US film industry are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
