John Cooper Clark was born in Salford, Lancashire, the son of engineer George Clark; mother Hilda Clark wrote poetry, although she was never published. As a teenager, John became interested in the mod movement; then he worked - in particular, an assistant to a civil engineer, a technician in the laboratory of the University of Salford, a typesetter. After an unsuccessful marriage and some time spent in Dorset, Clark returned to Manchester, where he began performing in clubs with public poetry readings.
