Born July 11, 1960, Miayneh, East Azerbaijan, Iran - Iranian editor, director, screenwriter and producer.

In his youth he shot short films, then served in the army, participated in the Iran-Iraq war. After military service, Panahi entered the university, at the same time made several amateur documentaries, and worked as an assistant director on the filming of several feature films, including the film "Through the Olives" by Abbas Kiarostami, released in 1994. A year later, Kiarostami helped write the script for the film White Ball, directed by Panahi.

Panahi's films have won prestigious international film awards, including the Golden Camera at the Cannes Film Festival (1995; The White Ball), The Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival (1997; The Mirror), The Golden Lion Venice Film Festival (2000; film "Circle") and "Silver Bear" Berlinale (2006; film "Offside").

In March 2010, Jafar Panahi was arrested and later sentenced to six years in prison for anti-government activities and participation in protests against the official results of the 2009 elections. Panahi has also been banned from filmmaking and interviewing for 20 years. Panahi did not have to serve time behind bars. Instead, the director ended up under house arrest. This did not become an obstacle to work. Jafar directed This Is Not a Film (2011) screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The material was removed from Iran on a USB stick hidden in a cake. Since then, the disgraced director can somehow move around Iran, but his passport is still with the authorities, which does not allow Panakhi to travel abroad. Despite the ban on filming, in 2013, Berlin hosted the premiere of his film Closed Curtain, filmed at the director's dacha. The film won the Berlinale's Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. And in 2015 his new work "Taxi" received the main prize at the same festival - the "Golden Bear", as well as the prestigious award from the International Federation of Film Press (FIPRESCI).

In October 2012, he became a laureate of the Sakharov Prize.
