After leaving school, Andersson wanted to study at the recently opened Film School in Stockholm (in 1970 it was transformed into the Institute of Dramatic Arts), but only those who reached 24 years old were admitted there, so he entered the University of Lund, where he studied history drama, theater and cinema. In 1967 he entered the Film School.

Andersson began his career as a director of commercials - and already his first job, advertising deodorant, won the Cannes Lion at the advertising festival. Before finishing his studies at the Film School, he shot his first full-length film - "The Swedish Love Story". This picture in 1969 was nominated for "Golden Bear" at the Berlin International Film Festival.

But his second film, Giliap (1976), failed.

Due to financial problems, Andersson started filming commercials again. These were unusual advertising miniatures, which were dramatized public stereotypes in long frames. These videos have received many awards, including eight Cannes Golden Lions at the Advertising Festival.

In 1977, Roy Andersson created his own production company, Roy Andersson Production, and in 1984, Studio 24, an independent production company, which he still runs today.

In 2000, he began development of his existential trilogy, consisting of the films Songs from the Second Floor, You Living and A Dove Sitting on a Branch Thinking about Life. Filming of the first full-length film lasted from 1996 to 2000. The second film (2007) is a tragicomedy consisting of fifty stories, which, according to the director, should show human existence in its entirety. The film won the Audience Award at the 2008 Gothenburg Film Festival. The third (2014) was awarded the main prize of the Golden Lion Venice Film Festival.
