Born in Buffalo into a good family. He began his studies at the University of Oregon (Oregon University), but soon, shortly before graduation, he realized that his vocation was theater. So he dropped out and joined a theater troupe in Denver.
His film and television career began in 1982, when he co-starred in the TV series Remington Steele. And the most important years in his career was 1985, when James Reed got the role of George Hazard in the miniseries North and South. In preparation for filming, James spent a lot of time at Patrick Swayze's ranch, where Swayze taught him horseback riding. On the set of the same series, Reed met Wendy Kilborn, whom he soon married, and with whom has been married for over 20 years, and in 1991 they had a son, Jackson.
