Burnett has produced over 2,900 hours of television programming that is regularly broadcast in over 70 countries around the world.

In December 2015, Burnett was named president of MGM Television and Digital Group, signing a five-year contract. His appointment coincided with the closure of MGM's acquisition of the remaining 45% stake in United Artists Media Group (UAMG), which will be acquired by MGM Television Group.

In 2004, Time magazine named Burnett one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In the same year, Burnett was named Philanthropist of the Year by the Reality Cares Foundation.

Burnett was a member of the Board of Directors of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for two years. In November 2007, Burnett was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the industry weekly Broadcast & Cable. On July 8, 2009, Burnett received a star at 6664 Hollywood Boulevard. In June 2011, Burnett was elected to the Board of Delegates for the Producers Guild of America and is currently a member of the Producers Board.
