The unusual spelling of his name Dav originated during his work at Pizza Hut, when the last letter "e" was mistakenly forgotten on his nameplate; even with this spelling, the name is still pronounced Dave, not Dev.
He had an older sister, Cindy. At a junior school in Elyria, Ohio, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. The files were often reprimanded for their behavior in the classroom, and therefore they were usually seated at a table outside the classroom in the hallway. Sitting at this table, he came up with the adventures of "Captain Cowards".
Pilki submitted his first book, World War Won, to a national student writing competition and won in his age category. The award included, among other things, the publication of his book in 1987
Pilki was a prolific writer, but took a break from his writing career for several years to look after his sick father. In 2010, he resumed his writing career, signing a contract with Scholastic to release 4 new graphic novels. The first of these, The Adventures of Wook and Gluck, Kungfu Cavemen from the Future, was released on August 10, 2010
Dave Pilki is best known as the author and illustrator of the Captain Cowards series of books.
He also wrote under the pseudonyms George Beard and Harold Hutchins, as well as the female pseudonym Sue Denim.
