Born December 10, 1958, Dorsten, Germany - German writer, actress, producer, author of over 40 children's books, for which she has received many awards.
Before becoming a writer, Cornelia Funke was a social worker dealing with the problems of disabled children. It was then that she truly realized the value of stories that helped her wards to escape from the sad reality and take their imagination to magical worlds. She also studied book illustration at the College of Design in Hamburg. And she began her career in children's books as an illustrator. Once Cornelia decided to write something herself, and it turned out that she liked creating stories more than drawing. Cornelia Funke wrote her first story at the age of 35. And so her writing career began. She is often compared to authors such as J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman.
In 2005, the Times magazine named Cornelia Funke “the most influential German woman in the world”. The King of Thieves has won two prestigious American children's literature awards in the category "Best Children's Book of the Year," and the Guardian magazine has placed the novel at number one on its children's literature charts.
Cornelia Funke writes primarily in the fantasy genre. The books are wildly popular in her homeland, and have also been translated into several languages, incl. and into Russian.
