Born 13 June 1962, Bangor, Northern Ireland, UK is a British writer, screenwriter, director and producer.

Studied at Bangor Grammar School, County Down, Northern Ireland, and left at the age of 16 to take up reporting for the County Down Spectator newspaper as an intern, then as a columnist and deputy editor. A collection of his columns was published in 1989 under the title "Bar stool boy" (The guy at the bar).

Bateman has been writing novels since his first novel, "Divorcing Jack" (Jack gets divorced) in 1994. "Divorcing Jack" won the Betty Trask Award in 1994, and in 1998 it was used as a film starring David Thewlis. Several of Bateman's novels feature a semi-autobiographical character, Belfast journalist Dan Starkey, as the protagonist.

Based on his book Murphy's Law, the BBC produced a television series of the same name, starring James Nesbitt.

His Titanic 2020 book for children was nominated for the 2008 Salford Children's Book Award.

Many of his works are signed simply as Bateman and not by his full name, his 2007 novel I Predict a Riot came out with a dedication to "my Christian name, abandoned but not forgotten."
