Born December 29, 1963, Maidenhead, UK is a British illustrator, photographer, filmmaker, graphic artist and comic book writer.

After a trip to New York in 1986, he met Neil Gaiman, with whom they worked on the graphic novel Violent Cases, published in 1987. In 1988 he worked on the Black Orchid comic, as well as the covers for the Hellblazer comics. Beginning in 1989, he created covers for Gaiman's comic "The Sandman", and in the same 1989, together with Grant Morrison, he worked on the graphic novel about Batman "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth".

More recent work includes his collaboration with Gaiman on children's books The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish (1998) and Wolves Within The Walls (2003), as well as the children's novels Coraline (2002) and with a cemetery "(2008). Wolves in the Walls was adapted for the musical, which premiered in 2006 in Glasgow. In 2011, McKean worked with Richard Dawkins on The Magic of Reality, a popular science book for children.

In January 2005, his first film, The Mirror Mask, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, written by Neil Gaiman. Prior to that, he was involved in the production of several music videos and short films. His second film, Luna, is slated for release in 2014.
