Born August 4, 1944, Bridgeport is an American actor. As a child, Richard worked as a newspaper delivery boy. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post newspaper. In college he participated in student demonstrations. Married Gail Ross in 1966, the marriage lasted six years. After the divorce, Belzer moved to New York, where he began performing as a stand-up comedian. He participated in the program "Saturday Night Live" (1975-1980). In 1976 he married a second time, this time the marriage lasted only two years. At the turn of the 1970s-1980s, Belzer got into the cinema, playing small roles in the films Glory, Scarface and others. In 1984, Belzer experienced a health problem and was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The following year, he married the third time - to actress Harley McBride. Since the early 1990s, Belzer has been active in television series. His most famous role is Detective John Munch. At first, Munch was a character in the series "Slaughter Department", then appeared in episodes of other series, including "The X-Files", and in 1999 he became a regular character in one of the offshoots of "Law & Order", where he still operates. Thus, Detective Munch became the most "long-lived" character in American television series. In the presidential elections in the 2000s, Belzer supported the Democratic candidates: in 2004 - John Kerry, and in 2008 - Barack Obama. Belzer has written several books and is a host on Air America Radio.
