Penny Marshall began her career by filming commercials for one of the shampoos, which also starred Farrah Fawcett, and later appeared in Marlo Thomas' TV series This Girl. From 1971 to 1975, she reached her first notoriety with her appearances on the sitcom Old Friends. During the same period, she auditioned for a role in the sitcom "All in the Family", but she was passed by Sally Struters. In 1974, she landed a role in the hit sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show while simultaneously hosting her own musical television show on CBS, and then appeared on another popular show of the period, Happy Days with Ron Howard.
