Penny Marshall began her career by filming commercials for one of the shampoos, which also starred Farrah Fawcett, and later appeared in Marlo Thomas' TV series This Girl. From 1971 to 1975, she reached her first notoriety with her appearances on the sitcom Old Friends. During the same period, she auditioned for a role in the sitcom "All in the Family", but she was passed by Sally Struters. In 1974, she landed a role in the hit sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show while simultaneously hosting her own musical television show on CBS, and then appeared on another popular show of the period, Happy Days with Ron Howard. Her character became so popular that she got her own sitcom Laverne and Shirley, a spin-off of Happy Days, which ran for eight seasons. and Marshall received three Golden Globe nominations.

After directing several TV shows, Marshall made her film debut with Whoopi Goldberg's The Jumping Jack. She went on to achieve further success with Tom Hanks' Big, which grossed over $ 100 million at the US box office, making her the first female director to have such a high grossing film, Awakening with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.
