She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and also attended the Neighborhood Playhouse. She made her theatrical debut in 1953 on Broadway in The Picnic. Later she played in such productions as "Good Woman Susan", "Uncle Vanya", "In the morning at seven", "Delicate Balance" and many others.
She made her film debut in 1955 in the adaptation of the Broadway production of Picnic. Later she starred in such films as "Birds" (1963), "The Graduate" (1967), "Nine to Five" (1980), "The Addams Family" (1991) and others.
