Served with the Royal Field Artillery during World War I. He participated in hostilities in Flanders and France and was demobilized in 1918 just before the end of the war. After the ruin of the family business, he began to study literature.

During the Second World War, Wheatley was a military strategist, while remaining a civilian. He sent a large number of analytical notes with his conclusions about the forthcoming course of the war, some of which in 1941 were published as a separate book, “Total War”.

Dennis Wheatley first published his novel Forbidden Territory in 1933, which opened a series of books about the adventures of the Duke de Richelot.
