Grew up under the strong influence of the film industry. He has been surrounded by films since his birth. His father, Charles O'Bannon, worked as a lighting fixture for Warner Brothers for over 30 years. His mother, Sheila, was a dancer at the MGM Grand and later became a housewife. His father brought him scripts for reading, and also took him to show the Warner Brothers sets. Rockney O'Bannon never received any formal higher education, he started working in high school. He began writing his first stories at the age of 12, some of them in the local newspaper, but O'Bannon's first really important publication happened when he was 19, after he graduated from high school. He continued to write numerous scripts in his spare time and began showing them off to those who might be interested in them.
