Born August 4, 1965, Boston, Massachusetts, USA is an American writer, screenwriter, producer, and actor.
grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a city on the brink of civil war in the 1970s. Subsequently, Dennis Lehane made this suburb of Boston the setting for his works. Both of his parents emigrated from Ireland. Dennis was the youngest child in a large family. Studied at Boston College High School (Boston Jesuit Preparatory School), Eckerd College and Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Before becoming a professional writer, he worked as a bookstore salesman, parking valet, limousine driver, and mentally handicapped child consultant.
In 1990 he started writing stories. Leahine's debut novel, A Drink Before the War, was released in 1994 and won the Shamus Award (for creating an interesting private detective). However, this novel was written earlier, back in 1991, when Dennis was a college student. Lehane works in a hard-boiled style, recognizing the influence of another Boston master of the detective genre, Robert Parker, on his work. Most of the writer's novels are part of a series about Dorchester detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angie Ginnaro.
The Mysterious River off-series novel was filmed in 2003 by Clint Eastwood. In addition to the Shamus Award, Lehane's books have received Anthony, Dilys and Nero Wolfe awards.
The novel by the writer Live by Night won the Edgar Poe Prize in 2013.
