She studied dramatic art at the University of Washington, after which she made her theatrical debut. Soon, the aspiring actress was noticed by the famous producer and director Howard Hawks, and Raines was the first of the actors to sign a contract with his new film studio BH Productions. In 1943, she made her film debut in Hawkes' film Corvette K-225, after which her career took off. In subsequent years, Raines gained sufficient popularity, thanks to her roles in the films Ghost Lady (1944), In the Saddle (1944), The Suspect (1944), The Web (1947), Brute Force (1947) ) and "Blow" (1949). In the wake of her success, the actress appeared on the cover of Life magazine twice - in 1944 and 1947.

The actress was married twice. Her second spouse was Brigadier General of the United States Air Force, World War II ace pilot Robin Olds, from whom she gave birth to two daughters. Their marriage lasted from 1947 until their divorce in 1976. Ella Raines died of cancer in Sherman Oaks, California in 1988. The actress was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to US film and television.
