Born November 22, 1940, Minneapolis, USA - British American-born film director, screenwriter, actor, animator, artist.

Terry graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles with a degree in political science, where he published the amateur humor magazine "Fang" while studying. After graduating from college, Gilliam worked at an advertising agency before being offered a job by Kurtzman magazine for Help! Magazine. He married make-up artist Maggie Weston, who did make-up for several of his films and was even nominated for an Oscar. Two daughters, one of them - Amy - became the producer of the film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus".

Gilliam started out as an animator and in that capacity was invited to work for a British studio.

Gilliam's first appearance on the movie screen took place in the movie almanac "And now something completely different" (1971). In 1975, Gilliam co-directed Terry Jones on the filming of the famous comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and his first solo directorial work was the film Jabberwock (1977), kept in the same "Python" intonations. In addition, Gilliam had a hand in other "Python" feature films - "Brian's Life after Monty Python" (1979) and "The Meaning of Life after Monty Python" (1983).

Gilliam's first independent film (1977) was coolly received by the public and film critics, although much later it earned a cult status among fans of the director's work. The title of the film was given by the eponymous verse by Lewis Carroll, it is also the name of the monster terrorizing the medieval kingdom.

Real success came to Gilliam after the release of the satirical dystopia "Brazil" (1985), which entered the classics of world cinema.

In 1988, Gilliam released The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. The film was based on the stories of Baron Munchausen, set out in the books of Erich Raspe and Gottfried August Burger.

In 1990, the film was nominated for four Oscars: for art design, costumes, make-up and visual effects. However, due to a change in the studio's management, the film's distribution fate changed at the very last moment and the film went unnoticed in cinemas.

In 1991, Gilliam released the psychological drama-parable "The Fisher King".

Gilliam's next science fiction film "12 Monkeys" (1995), based on the short film by Chris Marker "Runway", acquired cult status and was accompanied by commercial success.

In 1996, Terry Gilliam directed the stage show "Slava's Diabolo" by clown Vyacheslav Polunin.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, based on the novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hunter Thompson's Wild Journey to the Heart of the American Dream was released on May 22, 1998 and grossed just $ 10.5 million in the US on a budget of $ 18.5 million. However, later the film acquired cult status.

In September 2005, at the Toronto Festival, the world premiere of another Gilliam's film "Tideland" based on the novel of the same name by Mitch Cullin took place. In most countries the film was released directly to DVD or screened on a small screen.
