He was Jewish on his mother's side. His parents, who were never officially married, separated when he was young and he was raised by a single mother. Newley was evacuated during the Luftwaffe bombing of London, dubbed the London Blitz, and thus fell under the influence of the performing arts taught by George Pescud, a former British music hall entertainer. Although his teachers in London recognized Newley as very bright, he was not interested in school, and at the age of 14 worked as a messenger for an insurance company, then he read an ad in the Daily Telegraph, "Urgently Wanted Boys Actors." When he auditioned for advertisers at the prestigious Italian Academy of Theater Arts, he found that the tuition fees were too high for his family. However, after a short audition, he was invited to work as a messenger, on a salary of only 30 shillings (? 1.50) a week, but this also meant free tuition at the academy.
