Born February 29, 1972 - American writer, actor and musician, known for his style of mixing hip-hop and poetry in music. He is the youngest of three children and has two older sisters. After graduating from Morehouse College, where he studied philosophy, Saul moved to New York to pursue an MA in acting from New York University. In New York, he became seriously interested in poetry and spent a long time at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in Alphabet City, Manhattan. By 1995, Sol had shown great strides in poetry and in 1996 was awarded the title of slam champion at Nuyorican Poets Cafe, which brought him fame. As a result, he was offered the lead role in the 1998 film Slam, which won two Grand Prix awards at the Sundance Festival and the Golden Camera (Mark Levine) at the Cannes Film Festival. This film opened up Sol to a wide audience. During this time, Williams took up music. He has performed with artists such as The Fugees, Christian Alvarez, Blackalicious, Erykah Badu, KRS-One, Zack De La Rocha, De La Soul, and DJ Krust, as well as renowned poets Allen Ginsberg and Sonia Sanchez. After releasing several mini-albums, Saul recorded the full-length Amethyst Rock Star, directed by Rick Rubin. In September 2004, the next Saul Williams album was released, which became very successful. In the summer of 2005, Williams played several shows on the European Nine Inch Nails Tour, and also performed with The Mars Volta. In the same summer, Sol was invited to the Lollapaloosa Music Festival. Several of these performances drew a wide audience to Williams' work. He rejoined Nine Inch Nails on their North American tour in 2006, during which Trent Reznor reported, Williams' writings have been featured in The New York Times, Esquire, Bomb Magazine, and African Voices. In addition, he published four collections of poems. He visited several cities, lectured at many universities and colleges. Saul currently lives in Los Angeles, California. Williams is an outspoken critic of Bush's policies, his War on Terrorism and the Iraqi War; among his works, the antiwar hymns "Not In My Name" and "Act III Scene 2 (Shakespeare)" are best known.
