Born February 8, 1932, New York, USA - American composer and conductor, one of the most successful film composers in history.

In 1948, he and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he attended North Hollywood High School. Later he attended the Los Angeles University of California and Los Angeles City College, and also took private lessons from the composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 1952, Williams was drafted into the United States Air Force, where he served as arranger and conductor for the Air Force Orchestra until his retirement.

After completing his military service in 1954, Williams returned to New York and enrolled in the Juilliard School, where he was taught piano by Rosina Levina. During those years, Williams also worked as a jazz pianist in many clubs and studios in New York, where he performed with composer Henry Mancini, as well as on a series of albums by popular artist Frankie Lane, as a band leader.

From 1980 to 1993 he worked as a conductor of the Boston Variety Orchestra and is now its distinguished conductor. In 2006, he unexpectedly lost the sixth Oscar for the music for the film Memoirs of a Geisha to Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla for his work for the drama Brokeback Mountain, having previously won Grammy, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.

In March 2017, Williams wrote the score for the animated short Dear Basketball, directed by Glen Keane, based on a poem by Kobe Bryant.

Williams is a five-time Oscar winner (for the music for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, Alien, Schindler's List) and 51-time nominee ( the best result among film musicians, and the second in the number of Oscar nominations in history (only Walt Disney has more - 59) Laureate of the National Medal for Contribution to the Arts (USA) 4 times was awarded the Golden Globe, 7 times - BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards and 21 Grammy Awards
