British new wave group, formed in 1979 on the Isle of Wight, England, and performed - initially jazz-funk fusion in the tradition of Stanley Clarke, later - pop-rock with elements of funk, jazz and rhythm and blues. In 1980-1994, 30 Level 42 singles entered the UK Singles Chart: "Lessons in Love" had the highest score (# 3, 1986). Of the 14 albums of the group that were included in the UK Album Charts, two - Running in the Family (1987) and Staring at the Sun (1988) climbed the lists to # 2. Experts highly appreciated the instrumental skills of the band members, first of all - Mark King, who developed a virtuoso and unique technique of playing the bass guitar.
