The history of the origin of the original collective, as often happens, is very simple. Four friends decided for their own pleasure to play the compositions of the legendary Metallica band on cellos. At one of the performances in the music academy in Helsinki, where the guys were getting education, they were noticed by Kari Hinninen, the owner of the recording studio Zen Garden Records, and offered the guys to sign a contract. The collective sent the first recorded compositions to their idols for approval and received the green light. This is how the Apocalyptica group appeared in 1993, which included Paavo Lothjonen, Antero Manninen, Eikka Toppinen, Max Lilja. The debut disc Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos was released in 1996 and was something new in the world of music and sold a quarter of a million copies. Up until 2000, the group performed cover versions of world-famous rock compositions, only sometimes the songs that Toppinen wrote were slipped.
In 2000 the band released their third album, Cult, with new member Perttu Kivilaakso, who replaced Manninen, who left in 1999. The record consisted almost of its own material, featured guest voices for the first time, and required about 80 cellos to record. In 2002, Max Lilja left the quartet due to internal conflicts, he was replaced by the returning Antero, it was decided to take drummer Mikko Siren into the group. Such a line-up created in 2003 the Reflections disc, where violins, trumpet and piano were added to the compositions. Like previous works, this one was also accompanied by tours to different countries of the world.
2005 pleased the band's fans with a novelty - a new disc of the same name Apocalyptica. In his support, the musicians played 150 concerts in Europe and America. In the same year, work was underway on the tracks that were included in the new film with Apocalyptica Fight with a Shadow, but the guys did not participate in the shooting, the actors are shown in the frame. This was not the first experience of participation in cinema, their tracks sounded in the film Your friends and neighbors back in 1996.
For the next five years, the guys worked on records, which were aimed at attracting fans from Russia, toured the former union, re-recorded old compositions, participated as guests at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. 2013 was marked by a bright event dedicated to the anniversary of Richard Wagner - the German composer. The album Wagner: Reloaded was released especially for the action. In Leipzig on July 5, 2013, a stage performance took place, where you could see Apocalyptica online and admire what is happening. On April 7, 2015, another Shadowmaker album was released with an unusual cover for the participants.
