The group was formed in 1987, with the original line-up also included guitarist Jim Courie, vocalist Mike Monroe, bassist Jess Johnson and drummer Stuart Dowie. Although the musicians gravitated towards metal and were influenced by Riot, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, AC / DC and Megadeth, Meliah Rage spent their first tour with Boston hardcore band Gang Green.
