Mike & The Mechanics is an English-born musical rock band that was founded in 1984. The band is an independent project of Mike Rutherford, bassist of the art-rock band Genesis.

The idea to create his own project came to Mike after the activities of the band Genesis, in which he is a bass player, were frozen due to the pursuit of a solo career of its drummer and vocalist Phil Collins. Rutherford chose the name of his group, Mike & The Mechanics, so that it was initially clear that he was its leader. Even before the founding of the project, Mike managed to release several solo albums - "Acting Very Strange" and "Smallcreeps Day". It is not surprising that the content of the solo albums resembled the work of Genesis, which is why Rutherford decided to slightly change the style. In the mid-80s, Mike met Chris Neil, with whom he began to record new songs. As it turned out, things went well, which is why Neil becomes the producer of the next album. After the approval of the producer, the selection of musicians began. The first to become part of Mike & The Mechanics were keyboardist Adrian Lee and drummer Peter Van Hook. With them Rutherford began to record the first instrumental parts. The selection of a vocalist turned out to be more difficult. Among the many applicants, the four most suitable candidates were selected, and then, after a thorough audition, Paul Carrack was approved. However, the remaining three applicants also took part in recording one or two songs, after which Paul Young was included in the group.

The style of music in which they create Mike & The Mechanics is more related to rock, however, undoubtedly, the atmosphere of art-rock, to which Genesis belongs, is felt in the compositions.
