Born February 28, 1911 in Hradec Kralove, Austria-Hungary.
After graduating from high school, he studied architecture at technical universities in Brno and Prague. Beginning in 1929 he became interested in cinema, wrote articles about cinema. As a member of the "Left Front" association of progressive intelligentsia, he took part in organizing the first screenings of Soviet films in Czechoslovakia. By his own admission, the films of Eisenstein, Pudovkin and Dovzhenko played a decisive role in the final choice of a profession.
In the early 1930s, he shot several short films, mostly of an experimental nature. He has worked as a screenwriter and assistant director on a number of films.
As a screenwriter and director, he specialized in film adaptations of Czech and world classics. He made his debut in fiction with the film "Philosophical History" (1937, after Alois Jirasek).
At the end of the war (1944-1945), Vavra took part in the development of a project for the nationalization of domestic cinematography, and after his liberation, in its implementation.
Since 1947, he held a number of high positions in the structures of cinema (artistic director of the creative group, member of the collective management of the Barrandov film studio, member of the ideological and artistic councils of the general director of Czechoslovak Cinema, member of the advisory council of the Ministry of Culture and Education), defining the ideological and artistic direction Russian cinema.
Since 1956 - a teacher, and then a professor and head of the Department of Television and Film Directing of the Film Academy (FAMU).
Jury member of the XI Moscow Film Festival (in 1979) .
Vavra has been repeatedly awarded with prestigious state awards. Received all the titles awarded to cultural figures in the country - Honored Artist, People's Artist.
He passed away on September 15, 2011 in Prague.
