Born April 13, 1960, The Hague, The Netherlands - English-speaking writer and producer.
He and his parents emigrated to Australia in 1967. He attended elementary and high school in the suburbs of Melbourne Boronii and Bayswater, then attended the University of Melbourne, studying Dutch, philosophy, rhetoric, English (a course with translation and criticism of English - Anglo-Saxon and Middle English texts) and English literature. He graduated in 1980.
Worked as a packer in a cannery, janitor and other casual and low-profile jobs, was a "guinea pig" in medical research, a nurse in hospitals in Sydney and its suburbs. This continued until the mid-1990s. In 1993 he, his second wife and parents emigrated to Scotland.
Faber wrote from the age of fourteen, but did not send his manuscripts for publication and showed them to very few people. Many of the short stories that appeared in his debut collection, as well as early drafts, were completed in the 1980s and have been preserved. Another novel completed during this period, The Photo of Jesus, remains undisclosed. In the 1990s, with the encouragement of his wife Eva, Faber began participating in short story contests and winning. This led to his being approached by Edinburgh-based publishers Canongate Books, who have since published his work in the UK.
The first book published was a collection of short stories and was released in 1998. One short story won the Ian St James Award in 1996, another won the Macallan Prize, and The Half Million Pounds and Miracle short story won the 1997 Neil Gunn Award.
