Cryer was born in New York to Gretchen Cryer, playwright, songwriter, actress and singer, and Donald David Cryer, actor. Has two sisters, Robin and Shelley.
At the age of 12, he decided to become an actor. When his mother found out about it, she joked: "The plumber has a pretty good career." Cryer attended an arts education center for several years and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1983. Cryer was a classmate of writer and director Boaz Yakin. Much to his mother's dismay, he dropped out of college and went to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
