Aronofsky was born in New York, Brooklyn, the son of school teachers Abraham (Abe) and Charlotte Aronofsky. His father taught science and was dean of Bushwick High School.
Aronofsky graduated from one of the best schools in the country - Edward Marrow High School (New York). After leaving school, he traveled for 6 months in the Middle East, Europe and Guatemala, and in 1987 entered Harvard University, where he studied anthropology, film and animation. In 1990, as a term paper, he shot his first film "Cleaning the Supermarket". This short film was nominated for an American Film Academy Student Award in 1991. In 1991 at Harvard, Aronofsky managed to shoot another student short film Fortune Cookies. In the same year he graduated from Harvard with a BA with honors.
A year later, Darren moved to Los Angeles to study directing at the American Film Institute's Conservatory. He presented the short film Protozoa as his graduation work and received his Master of Fine Arts (M.FA) degree in 1993.
Aronofsky began working on his first feature film, Pi, in 1995 after returning to New York. Aronofsky's surreal thriller was presented at the 1998 Sundance Independent Film Festival. After winning several festival awards, the film with a budget of $ 60,000 eventually grossed $ 3.2 million at the box office, which allowed him to pay off debt and plan his next work.
