The actress first appeared on screen at the age of three in the film Attack of the Light Cavalry, directed by her father. She received her education at Thatcher School in Ohai, California.

Joely wanted to become a professional tennis player and spent two years at the Florida Tennis Academy, but reappeared in 1985 as a young version of her mother's character in Weatherby.
