Born 1970, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - American screenwriter and producer.
After writing scripts for Suncatcher (1996), The Giant (1998) and Planet Ka-Pax (2002), Warner Bros. hired Leavitt in February 2004 to rewrite early drafts for the movie Blood Diamond, then called Okavango. The plot fell into "production hell" at the studio for several years, until producers Paula Weinstein and Gillian Gorfil decided on the story of an African farmer caught up in a conflict between an American smuggler and a local diamond mining organization. Leavitt researched the diamond industry very deeply before writing the script, explaining that he was "always a fan of immersion in research." He wrote the script suggesting that it might offend the diamond industry, partly to De Beers, and made sure to portray the industry faithfully, fearing that De Beers and other powerful mine corporations could probably sue him. Paula Weinstein was impressed by Leavitt's Blood Diamond script, but hired screenwriters Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz to rewrite the script; by the time he finished the script, Zwick had become interested in the plot, agreeing to direct the film.
Warner Bros. signed with Leavitt in October 2006 to adapt a novel by Vanity Fair publisher Doug Stumpf, Confessions of a Wall Street Shoe Cleaning Boy, to which the studio acquired the rights in mid-2005. Since then, he's also the original script by Scott Williams for The Express, a biopic about American football player Ernie Davis. He wrote the screenplay for In the Heart of the Sea for Intermedia and Spring Creek, as well as the spec script for Animal Kingdom.
