Charles Bukowski was born in the summer of 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland. Soon the Bukowski family changed their place of residence, moving to Los Angeles. For almost ten years he traveled across America, writing down his impressions in a notebook, and then transforming them into stories. In 1947, Bukowski married Jane Baker, who, by the way, was 11 years older than the writer. The woman, like Charles, suffered from alcoholism. Their marriage lasted 8 years. His second wife was the editor of a Texas print publication, Barbara Fry. Three years later, the couple divorced - Barbara could not stand the endless binges of her husband.

All this time, Charles did not stop writing stories "on the table", and only by the end of the 60s decided to publish in magazines. And in 1967, he was already a columnist in one of the most famous California newspapers. Bukowski quickly became a popular writer, falling in love with many readers for writing in the style of "dirty realism", talking about his life "without embellishment."

It is not known how many years Charles Bukowski would have worked at the post office if it had not been for the literary agent John Martin, who suggested that Charles sign a contract with him and leave the postal service. Without thinking twice, the writer gave his consent.
