Was born on March 26, 1908 in Pskov. He began his career at the "Rabotnitsa" factory, where he worked as a comb-operator and weigher. Then he studied at the Leningrad College of Performing Arts, in the studio of Evgeny Chervyakov. Since the late 1920s, he began acting in films. The actor became famous with the role of the Architect in the film "Crown Prince of the Republic". He was the first candidate for the role of Petka in the film "Chapaev" - he had previously starred with the Vasiliev brothers, and, apparently, they liked him. But he refused the role, considering it uninteresting, which he later regretted all his life. He starred in "Chapaev" in a tiny episodic role of a sentry - probably so as not to offend the directors. The actor was one of the main contenders for the role of Pushkin in the film "Youth of the Poet". But he was not taken because of his age. Lyrics for many famous films of different years - "Seven Brave", "Volochaevskie days", "The nineteenth year", "Komsomolsk", "For the Soviet Motherland", "Wait for me". He wrote scripts for the films "Patriot" (1933) and "Distant Voyage" (1940). During the war he commanded a platoon on the Leningrad front and was seriously wounded in the arm. A part of his bone was removed, after which his hand simply hung on the skin and muscles all his life. In the film "Wait for Me," the actor played a wounded man - and so he had a real wound there. After being wounded in the war, he took up directing. In 1927-1930 he studied at the Leningrad College of Performing Arts. Since 1930 - an actor at the Lenfilm film studio. In 1941-1942 he took part in the Great Patriotic War. In 1948-1951 - Deputy General Director of Sovexportfilm. Since 1951 - director of the Lenfilm film studio, then - director of dubbing.
He passed away on February 26, 1994 in St. Petersburg.
