The talented film actor Leonid Aleksandrovich Kmit (real name Alexey Kmita) hails from St. Petersburg, where he was born on March 9, 1908 in an ordinary working class family. The actor's mother was a weaver, and his father was a stoker. Leonid Kmit himself always dreamed of being a sailor, but vision problems did not allow the young man's desires to become reality. After leaving school, Leonid was forced to go to work at a factory as a mechanic. Later she studied at the Theater Workshops, as well as at the Institute of Arts in Leningrad. Despite stuttering, Kmit made a career in the theater, starting with the stage of the Red Army Theater (1936-1939), and since 1957 he has been a leading actor in the theater-studio of the film actor.

Kmit came to the domestic cinema in 1928, and he played the first roles in silent films. When the talkie appeared, the actor was worried about his speech problems. Who needs a tongue-tied actor? The case helped: once Leonid fell into a well and after the incident never stuttered again.

Kmit received fame, success and national recognition after the appearance of the film Chapaev. Cheerful and lively Petka, the orderly of the legendary division commander, became a favorite of the audience. The film was released in 1934 and they say that I. Stalin himself watched it many times, and K. Voroshilov, in gratitude for the role, gave L. Kmit a small apartment in Moscow. In subsequent years, films were shot with Leonid Kmit Riders (1939), New House (1948), Someone else's Relatives (1955), Dangerous Tours (1969), Just One Night (1976) and many others. For all the time, the actor has played more than sixty diverse roles in the cinema. But the roles of Stepan Dugovets in the film To Me, Mukhtar are rightfully considered the best! and Gregory Bannik in the film adaptation of Virgin Soil Upturned.

The last film with Leonid Kmit was filmed in 1980. It was the Star Inspector, in which the actor played the role of a reporter.

L. Kmit passed away on March 11, 1982.
