Egan was born in Sydney and at the age of 15 he joined the cast of the popular Australian television series Home and Away. For three and a half years he played the role of Nick Smith and left the series in 2003. He later moved to Los Angeles and landed a role in The Return, then the role of Agrippa in the American miniseries Empire and starred in Virgin Territory .
Soon after The Decameron, Egan successfully auditioned for the role of Roran, Eragon's cousin, in Eragon and flew to Budapest, Hungary to begin filming.
