In cinema since 1917. He was an assistant to cameramen who worked with director Cecil De Mille. Since 1924 - cameraman (Drums of Fate). Has directed many significant American films. Worked in collaboration with directors Howard Hawks, Otto Preminger, Elia Kazan and others; one of the largest American operators. Filmed black and white, color and widescreen films. In 1953 he made his directorial debut ("Go, man, go!"). He worked on television. Author of articles on camera art. 1950-1960s - Vice President of the American Operators Association.
