Born in Vizhnitsa into a famous Jewish family. His father, a successful lawyer, was for a time the attorney general of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Like his father, Otto studied law with his brother Ingwald (who later became a famous film producer) and received his doctorate in 1926. During this time he became interested in theater and became an actor and assistant director of Max Reinhardt at the Theater in Josefstadt. In October 1935, three years before the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany, Preminger emigrated to the United States. Here he works as an actor and director for the 20th Century Fox film studio. Due to his Austrian accent in films, he plays Nazis despite his Jewish background.
After the war, in the 1950s and early 1960s, he became an established Hollywood filmmaker.
In 1977 he wrote a book of memoirs.
