Gu Changwei - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Operator, Director, Producer, Actor, Writer.

Born December 12, 1957, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China - Chinese cameraman and director.

He entered the Cinematography Department of the Beijing Film Academy in 1978 and graduated in 1982, along with Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, who soon became known as the leading directors of the "fifth generation" of Chinese cinema.

Gu's first major success comes from the films of two of his fellow students: in 1988, he received the Golden Rooster National Film Award for his cinematography in Chen Kaige's King of Children and Zhang Yimou's Red Gaoliang. Gu subsequently worked with both directors on more than one occasion, including Chen Kaige's famous film Farewell, My Concubine (1993). The film itself was awarded the Palme d'Or in Cannes, and Gu was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography (1994). Like another famous Chinese cameraman Zhao Fei, also a 1982 Academy graduate, Gu got the opportunity to work in Hollywood. In the USA, he, in particular, filmed "Leshy", one of the later works of Robert Altman.

In 2005, Gu Changwei's directorial debut, the family drama Peacock, was released. The film took part in the competition of the Berlin Film Festival and brought the director the Grand Prix of the jury. So far, Gu has directed three films as a director.
