Mike Newell was born in Hertfordshire (England) on March 28, 1942. After graduating from a local school, he enters Magdalene College in Cambridge, after which he attends courses with a focus on theatrical activities for three years, Granada Television. After working for several years at the same television company, Newell begins directing television films on his own. The first independent work of a novice director was the television film The Man in the Iron Mask (1977). This work was followed by the horror films Resurrection (1980), Bad Blood (1981) and the short series Blood Feud (1983) about Robert Kennedy and Jim Hoff. Mike manages to finally gain a foothold in the status of a highly professional, serious director in 1985 with Dance with a Stranger. The picture, in which Miranda Richardson played the main role, is highly appreciated by film critics, despite the fact that it is not popular with viewers. 1985 saw the release of The Good Father, starring Anthony Hopkins. The picture fails at the box office despite the actor's brilliant acting, marking the beginning of a black streak in the director's career. The director's four main films: Amazing Grace and Chuck (1987), Sweet and Sour (1988), Witching April (1992) and Westward (1992) fail one after the other. The series of failures is interrupted in 1994. The low-budget film ($ 6 million) "Four Weddings and a Funeral" starring Hugh Grant, unexpectedly for everyone, becomes one of the most successful films of the year, grossing about $ 250 million in the world box office.
Once again "stumbling" in 1995 with the film "Awfully Big Adventure", which grossed less than 300 thousand at the box office, the director, apparently, finds a recipe for success, since the film "Donnie Brasco", released in 1997, starred Al Pacino, and almost all of his subsequent works appeal to the audience. The most popular films are Mona Lisa Smile (2003) with Julia Roberts in the title role, and, of course, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), which grossed a little less than a billion dollars worldwide. Despite the fact that the director's last film, Love in Time of Cholera (2007), received rather cool reviews from critics and viewers, the actor's fans are eagerly awaiting the release of his next works, the most interesting of which is the fantasy thriller Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time », The release of which is scheduled for 2010.
