Born September 16, 1960, Berkeley is an American artist, illustrator, and comic book writer. He got his first job as an illustrator in 1980 for Comic Reader magazine. Mike's illustration was first published in issue 183 of the magazine. This illustration depicted Red Sonja (page 9). Mike's first cover was published in November 1981 in Comic Reader issue 196.
Mike graduated from California College of Art in 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. Since 1983 he has worked as a contributor for Marvel Comics on the series: "Daredevil", "Power Man and Iron Fist". Later he worked on the covers of the series "Hulk", "Alpha Squad" and the limited series "Rocket Raccoon". Mike also designs covers for various Batman series, including Batman: A Death in the Family and Dark Knight, Dark City .
Together with screenwriter Jim Starlin in 1988, Mike released the mini-series "A Space Odyssey.
In the early 1990s, Mike worked on covers and illustrations for many DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
After years of working on comics with alien characters, in 1994 Mike began illustrating his own comic strip, Hellboy. The first miniseries about the hero, Hellboy: The Seed of Destruction, is written by John Byrne and published by Dark Horse Comics. The next published series about Hellboy: “Wolves of St. August ”, and most of all the other episodes were created based on the scripts of Mike himself, although other writers and authors also worked on the character. Mike remains the main illustrator for the Hellboy comics until 2007, when Duncan Fegredo succeeds him. Since then Mignola has been mostly busy building the script and creating the covers for the episodes.
He also covers the Bureau for Paranormal Investigation and Defense spin-off, scripted by John Arkudi and illustrated by Guy Davis. It wasn't until 2008 that Mike returned to illustrating the Hellboy series in In the Chapel of Moloch.
