September 13, 1880, San Francisco - January 13, 1958, Beverly Hills - American film producer.
He changed many jobs, but began his career in the entertainment industry with vaudeville, which subsequently led him into the film business. His sister Blanche married Samuel Goldwyn, and in 1913 Lasky, Goldwyn, Cecil B. De Mille, and Oscar Apfel founded the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company. On a budget, they rented a barn near Los Angeles where they made the first Hollywood feature film, Indian Husband. This shed, now known as the Laskey-DeMille Barn, is now home to the Hollywood Heritage Museum. In 1916, their company merged with Adolf Zukor's Famous Players Film Company to form the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. In 1920 they built a large studio in Astoria, New York, now known as the "Astoria Kaufman Studio". In 1927 Lasky was one of the thirty-six founders of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Due to financial problems in the industry as a result of the Great Depression, the Famous Players Film Company went into bankruptcy in 1933. Jesse Lasky then collaborated with Mary Pickford for the production of films, but after a few years she terminated the business relationship. Laski then worked as a producer in one of the big studios until 1945, when he created his own production company. He made his last film in 1951 and published his autobiography in 1957, I Blow My Own Horn.
