Samuel Goldwin - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Producer.
genus. August 17, 1879 Warsaw - January 31, 1974 Los Angeles - Patriarch of Hollywood, one of the most successful film producers in US history. He participated in the creation of three film studios that exist to this day. Actor Tony Goldwyn's grandfather.
The real name is Schmuel Gelbfisz. He was born during the reign of Alexander II into a poor family of Warsaw Jews. As a teenager, he left in search of a better life with relatives in Birmingham, where he anglicized his name as Samuel Goldfish (Goldfish). In 1898 he entered the United States across the Canadian border, where he became a successful sales manager. In 1913, Goldfish and his wife's brother, Jesse Lasky, decided to invest their savings in the production of the film. Cecile de Mille was invited as a director. The fruit of their joint efforts was the rather successful Western Indian Husband (1914). Goldfish chairs the board of directors of Jesse Lasky Feature Photoplay Company, founded by three partners. In 1916, after the merger with Adolf Zukor's company, he was ousted from the management of the Paramount Pictures studio formed during the merger. In the same year, Goldfish founded a new company, Goldwyn Pictures, with the Selvin brothers. The name was made up of their names. In 1924, when the company began filming the legendary film Greed, it was bought by Markus Lov. The merger of Goldwyn's company (by which time he had once again changed his last name) with Metro Pictures Corporation gave rise to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), which continued to use Goldwyn's studio roaring lion as its logo. Despite the presence of his name in the name of the MGM studio, Goldwyn himself never worked for this company. In 1923 he founded Samuel Goldwyn Productions. From now on, his credo was the following: to shoot one film at a time, but not skimp on expenses and attract the best professionals in their field to the shooting. Director William Wyler and screenwriter Ben Hecht become Goldwyn's permanent employees. The company's products were delivered to cinemas under the auspices of United Artists, since 1941 under the RKO Radio Pictures brand. In 1947, Goldwyn received the Irving Thalberg award. After a cold reception to the musical Porgy and Bess in 1959, he announced the end of a half-century career in the film business.
